Sizing Is the Whole Decision

The single most consequential choice in a boiler installation is capacity, and it's the one most often got wrong. An oversized boiler short-cycles — firing, satisfying the thermostat quickly, shutting down and repeating — which wastes fuel, wears components far faster and heats unevenly. An undersized one runs continuously and never quite gets there on the coldest nights.

Correct sizing comes from a heat loss calculation based on your actual house: square footage, insulation, window area and type, ceiling heights, and the emitters you're feeding. It is not a matter of matching the output of whatever was there before, because the old unit may itself have been wrong and your house may have been insulated or extended since.

We also look at what the boiler is feeding. Cast iron radiators, baseboard convectors and radiant floor loops have genuinely different temperature requirements, and a modern condensing boiler only achieves its rated efficiency if it can run at the lower return temperatures its design assumes.

Gas, Venting and Doing It to Code

A boiler installation is a gas and venting job as much as a plumbing one, which is why we keep it with our own licensed technicians rather than subcontracting. We verify the gas supply is adequately sized for the new appliance alongside everything else on the line, run venting correctly for the appliance type, and pressure-test and leak-check before commissioning.

The work is permitted and inspected in Anne Arundel County, and we handle that. When we're done we commission the system properly — balancing, purging air, setting curves and controls — because a correctly installed boiler that was never commissioned still heats unevenly. And we'll set you up with annual maintenance, which is what protects both the warranty and the efficiency you paid for.

When to Call for Boiler Installation

Your Boiler Is Past 20 Years

Beyond two decades, efficiency has usually fallen far enough that fuel savings from a modern unit outweigh continued repairs.

Repeated Repairs in One Season

Multiple failures across a single winter signal a system at the end of its life rather than a run of bad luck.

A Cracked or Failed Heat Exchanger

Urgent

This is the component that effectively ends a boiler. Replacing it rarely makes economic sense against a new unit.

It Short-Cycles Constantly

Firing and stopping repeatedly usually means the existing boiler was oversized — a problem correct sizing solves at replacement.

How it works

Straightforward From Call to Cleanup

  1. Call and Talk to a Real Person

Call (410) 268-7191 during office hours and you'll reach a real person — no phone tree. We'll arrange a consultation.

  2. Calculate the Load

We size from a heat loss calculation on your actual house and the emitters it uses, not from the old unit's nameplate.

  3. Specify, Permit and Quote

We recommend a unit, confirm gas supply and venting requirements, pull the permit, and quote flat-rate before starting.

  4. Install and Commission

We install, leak-test, purge and balance the system, set the controls, and see it through inspection.

The Heidler difference

Why Annapolis Trusts Heidler

Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Since 1947

Boilers have been core to Heidler for three generations — not a scope we picked up recently or subcontract out.

Sized by Calculation

Matching the old unit's output is how oversizing gets perpetuated. We calculate against your house as it is today.

Commissioned, Not Just Installed

Purging, balancing and control setup are what turn a correctly installed boiler into one that actually heats evenly.

Gas and Venting In-House

Supply sizing and venting are handled by our own licensed technicians, so nothing falls between two contractors.

Questions?

Boiler Installation FAQs

How do you decide what size boiler I need?

A heat loss calculation based on your home's square footage, insulation, windows, ceiling heights and the emitters it feeds. We don't simply match the output of the old unit, because that unit may have been wrong and your house may have changed since.

Is a high-efficiency condensing boiler always better?

Usually, but only if your system can run at the lower return temperatures condensing operation requires. With high-temperature cast iron radiators the real-world gain can be smaller than the rating suggests, and we'll be straight with you about that.

How long does an installation take?

A straightforward like-for-like replacement is often one to two days. Changing fuel type, relocating the unit, or reworking venting extends that, and we'll give you a realistic schedule with the quote.

Do I need a permit?

Yes, and the work requires inspection in Anne Arundel County. We handle permitting as part of the job.

Does a new boiler need annual servicing?

Yes — and most manufacturer warranties require it. Annual [maintenance](/boiler-maintenance) protects both the warranty and the efficiency you paid for.
