Water Treatment in Annapolis, MD

Every home's water is different, especially across Anne Arundel County where county supply and private wells sit side by side. Heidler, Inc. tests your water and designs a treatment system around what's actually in it — not a package off a shelf.

Treatment Designed Around Your Water Test

"Water treatment" covers several genuinely different problems that people tend to lump together. Hardness is calcium and magnesium. Iron and manganese cause orange and black staining. Sediment is physical particulate. Chlorine affects taste and odour. Bacteria is a safety issue. Each has a different solution, and a system that fixes one will do nothing at all for the others.

That's why every water treatment job we do starts with testing rather than a recommendation. Once we know what's in your supply, we can stage the treatment in the right order — sediment removal before finer filtration, iron removal before softening — so each stage protects the one behind it and the whole system lasts longer.

Households on county-supplied water in Annapolis are generally dealing with taste, odour and moderate hardness. Households on private wells in Gambrills, Millersville, Edgewater and out toward Davidsonville commonly face iron, manganese, hardness and sometimes bacteria. Those are very different projects.

What a Complete System Looks Like

A properly designed whole-home system typically starts with sediment filtration to catch particulate, follows with any required iron or manganese removal, then softening for hardness, and finishes with carbon filtration for taste and odour. Where drinking water quality is the priority, a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink removes up to 99% of dissolved solids.

Not every home needs all of that. Plenty need one stage. The point of testing first is to spend money on the stages that will actually change something, and to size them so they don't become a maintenance burden.

Know the warning signs

When to Call for Water Treatment

Orange or Black Staining

Iron leaves orange marks, manganese leaves black. Both stain fixtures and laundry and need dedicated removal, not just softening.

Grit in Aerators or Cloudy Water

Sediment reaching your fixtures means particulate is getting through to appliances too, where it causes wear you don't see.

Chlorine Taste or Smell

Common on county-supplied water. It's a comfort issue rather than a safety one, and carbon filtration removes it cleanly.

You've Never Tested a Private Well

Urgent

Nobody is treating well water but you. If it has never been tested, you genuinely don't know what your household is drinking.

The Heidler difference

Why Annapolis Trusts Heidler

Serving Annapolis Since 1947

We know this county's water — county supply and private wells alike — because we've been treating it for three generations.

Testing Comes First, Always

We won't quote a system before we know what's in your water. Anything else is selling equipment rather than solving a problem.

Right-Sized, Not Over-Sold

If one stage fixes your problem, we'll fit one stage. Multi-stage systems are for multi-stage problems.

Service After the Sale

Filters need changing and controls need adjusting. We handle the ongoing maintenance rather than disappearing after install.

Questions?

Water Treatment FAQs

What's the difference between filtration and softening?

Filtration removes physical and chemical contaminants — sediment, chlorine, iron, organic compounds. Softening specifically removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness. They solve different problems, and many homes need both.

Do I need treatment if I'm on county water?

Not for safety — Anne Arundel County water is treated to EPA standards. Most county-supplied households who install treatment do it for taste, odour, and to reduce the scale that shortens appliance life.

How often should well water be tested?

Annually at minimum, and immediately if the taste, colour or smell changes. Well water isn't monitored by anyone but you, and conditions genuinely shift over time.

Is reverse osmosis worth it?

For drinking water, often yes — it removes up to 99% of dissolved solids including lead and other heavy metals. It's typically fitted at the kitchen sink rather than whole-home, because treating every gallon that flushes a toilet to drinking standard makes little sense.

Which areas do you serve for water treatment?

Annapolis, Arnold, Bowie, Crofton, Edgewater, Gambrills, Glen Burnie, Millersville, Odenton, Pasadena, Severn, Severna Park, Stevensville and the surrounding Anne Arundel County communities.
