Common Gas Fireplace Faults
**The pilot won't stay lit.** This is the most frequent call we get, and it's most often a failing thermocouple or thermopile — the safety component that senses the pilot flame and holds the gas valve open. When it weakens, the valve closes and the pilot drops out. It can also be a dirty pilot orifice or a draft problem.
**It won't ignite at all.** Igniter electrodes, control modules, wall switches and receivers all fail, and on a system with remote control there are more links in that chain than most homeowners realise. We work through it systematically rather than replacing the expensive part first.
**The flame looks wrong.** A gas flame should be predominantly blue at the base. Heavy yellow flame, black sooting on the glass or logs, or a strong odour during operation all indicate incomplete combustion — which produces carbon monoxide and needs prompt attention rather than a wait-and-see.
**The glass is sooting or fogging.** Usually incorrect log placement disturbing the burn pattern, a dirty burner, or an air-shutter adjustment that has drifted. Log position in particular matters far more than it looks.

Why won't my gas fireplace pilot stay lit?

Why is the glass on my fireplace going black?
Sooting means incomplete combustion, commonly from logs positioned incorrectly, a dirty burner, or air-shutter drift. Log placement matters far more than it appears — a set arranged wrongly will soot indefinitely until it's corrected.
Is a yellow flame in a gas fireplace normal?
Some yellow tipping is normal in decorative log sets, but a predominantly yellow flame with sooting or odour is not. It indicates incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide production, and warrants stopping use until it's checked.
