Can you actually excavate at night or on a weekend?
Yes, through Maryland's emergency excavation provision, which exists for work preventing loss or injury to life, health, property, or essential public service. It requires immediate notification to the one-call system rather than the standard two-business-day wait, and utility owners must respond to that emergency ticket within two hours. What we won't do is dig with no notification at all.
What should I do before you arrive?
For a water line failure, shut off the main if you can reach it safely and stop using water. For a sewer backup, stop running water anywhere in the house — every gallon you send down makes it worse — and keep people away from the contaminated area. For any gas odor outdoors, leave the area and call the utility from a safe distance before calling us.
Is emergency work more expensive?
You still get a flat rate quoted before we start, the same as any Heidler job. What changes the number is the work itself — night access, the state the failure has left the site in, and whether it's a repair or a replacement — not a surprise multiplier applied after the fact.
Will my yard be left open?
If the repair finishes at night, we secure the excavation safely and come back to restore in daylight. An open trench near a house isn't something we leave unattended and unmarked, and backfill compaction is worth doing properly rather than by work light.
Does homeowners insurance cover this?
It varies a great deal by policy and by cause, and we won't tell you what yours covers. What we can do is document the failure and the work clearly so you have what a claim needs. Call your carrier early rather than after the repair is finished and buried.
