When the Line Actually Has to Come Out of the Ground
Most sewer problems don't need a trench, and we'll tell you so. A blockage clears, a cracked section takes a spot repair, and a deteriorated but intact pipe is usually a candidate for trenchless repair that leaves your lawn where it is. Permits, Utilities, and the Two Days Before Anyone Digs
Maryland law requires a Miss Utility ticket at least two full business days before excavation begins, not counting weekends or holidays, so the utility owners have that window to come out and mark their lines. The ticket then stays good for twelve business days. The only exemption is a homeowner hand-digging entirely on their own property without machinery — which is not what a sewer lateral repair is. When somebody offers to dig your yard tomorrow, this is the step they're skipping.
If the work reaches the county right-of-way — a street cut, a utility cut, a test pit, or coming up through a driveway apron — that's a separate Anne Arundel County right-of-way permit on top of the plumbing permit. We pull what the job needs and see it through inspection, the same way we handle permitting on sewer replacement. Downtown, be aware that some historic-district blocks restrict open excavation entirely, which is exactly where trenchless stops being a preference and becomes the only route.

How do I know if I need excavation instead of trenchless repair?
The camera answers it. Trenchless lining needs a host pipe with enough remaining structure to line, and pipe bursting needs a path the new pipe can follow. A fully collapsed section, a severe belly holding standing water, or badly offset joints take that option away. How long will my sewer be out of service?
For a typical residential lateral repair the line is out during the working portion of the dig, not the whole project — the permitting and Miss Utility wait happen before we ever open ground. We'll give you a realistic window for your specific job when we quote it, including whether you should plan to be out of the house.
Will you have to dig up my driveway or sidewalk?
Only if the line genuinely runs under it, and we'll know that from the locate before we start rather than discovering it halfway through. Where the route crosses hardscape, that's usually the point where trenchless becomes worth the comparison, because the restoration cost of concrete or brick often exceeds the difference in method.
How deep are sewer lines around Annapolis?
