Gas Line Repair, Installation and Leak Detection

**If you smell gas, leave the building first.** Call the gas utility from outside, and don't switch anything electrical on or off on your way out. Once you're safe and the utility has been notified, call us at (410) 268-7191 and we'll handle the repair.

Our gas line work splits into three related things. **Installation** covers new lines for ranges, dryers, water heaters, boilers, fireplaces, outdoor grills and generators — the critical part being that the supply is sized so every appliance still gets adequate pressure once the new one is added. **Repair** covers corroded, damaged or improperly installed line, including the older black iron that has been in service for decades in much of this county's housing.

**Leak detection** covers finding what you can't see, using combustible gas detectors and pressure testing to isolate which section of a system is losing gas. That's a different discipline from water leak detection and it's one where being thorough genuinely matters.

Why Sizing and Testing Are the Whole Job

The two most common problems we find in existing gas systems are both invisible. The first is undersized supply: a line adequate for the appliances present in 1985 that has since had a second furnace, a range and a fireplace added to it. Every appliance on that system runs starved, which causes poor combustion and premature failure without ever looking like a gas problem.

The second is inadequate testing after work. A joint that was never properly pressure-tested can weep slowly for years. We pressure-test every gas job and leak-check every joint before sign-off, and we permit the work where Anne Arundel County requires it. That's not extra care — with gas it's the baseline.

Where the run has to go underground — out to a standby generator, a pool heater, an outdoor kitchen or a detached garage — see gas line excavation for what burial adds to the job.

Know the warning signs

When to Call for Gas Line Repair, Installation & Leak Detection

The Smell of Gas

Urgent

Rotten-egg odor means leave the building and call the utility from outside immediately. Everything else waits until you're clear.

A Hissing Sound Near a Line or Appliance

Urgent

Audible hissing at a connection or along a run indicates gas escaping under pressure. Evacuate and call — don't investigate.

Dead Vegetation Over a Buried Line

Urgent

A patch of grass or shrubs dying in a line over the gas service often marks an underground leak displacing oxygen at the roots.

Appliances Underperforming Together

Several gas appliances running weakly at once usually means the supply is undersized or restricted rather than each one failing.

How it works

Straightforward From Call to Cleanup

  1. Safety First, Then Call

Suspected leak? Leave and call the utility from outside. Then call (410) 268-7191 and we'll get to you as fast as we can.

  2. Detect and Isolate

We use combustible gas detection and pressure testing to identify exactly which section of the system is at fault.

  3. Size, Quote and Permit

For new work we calculate supply sizing across all appliances, quote flat-rate, and pull the permit where required.

  4. Test Before Sign-Off

Every joint is leak-checked and the system pressure-tested before we hand it back and see it through inspection.

The Heidler difference

Why Annapolis Trusts Heidler

Licensed, In-House Gas Technicians

We don't subcontract gas work. It's been part of Heidler since 1947 and it stays with our own licensed people.

We Size the Whole System

Adding an appliance without recalculating supply starves everything on the line. We do the calculation rather than hoping.

Tested, Every Time

Pressure-tested and leak-checked before sign-off, without exception. With gas there's no acceptable version of assuming.

Gas Calls Come First

A suspected gas leak goes to the front of our schedule. Call the utility from outside first, then call us.

Questions?

Gas Line Repair, Installation & Leak Detection FAQs

What do I do if I smell gas in my house?

Leave immediately and take everyone with you. Call the gas utility from outside the building. Don't switch lights, appliances or anything electrical on or off, and don't try to find the leak. Once the utility has made things safe, call us for the repair.

Can you add a gas line for a new range or grill?

Yes. The key part is sizing — adding an appliance to a supply that's already at capacity leaves everything on that system underperforming. We calculate the load across all appliances before running anything new.

How do you find a gas leak?

Combustible gas detectors identify the presence and rough location, and pressure testing isolates which section of the system is losing gas. Between them we can narrow it to a specific run or joint rather than replacing line speculatively.

Is black iron pipe still acceptable?

Yes, it's still standard for interior gas piping and much of this county's older housing uses it. What matters is its condition — badly corroded sections need replacing, and any modification needs proper testing afterward.

Do I need a permit for gas line work?

Almost always, and the work requires inspection in Anne Arundel County. We handle permitting as part of the job so compliance isn't something that surfaces later during a home sale.
