What Are the Advantages of Gas Log Fireplaces?

There is a certain comfort from sitting in front of a glowing fire. However, cleaning up a traditional wood-burning fireplace can be a hassle. In addition, stocking up on firewood is another inconvenience homeowners like you don't have the time for. This is why we recommend installing a gas log fireplace to minimize your inconvenience while maximizing home comfort.

Since you are not burning wood, gas log fireplaces are much simpler to maintain — there's no ash to shovel, no soot accumulating in the room, and no wood to buy, split, stack, dry and carry. They light instantly with a switch or remote rather than needing kindling and patience, and they shut off just as quickly when you're done.

They're also markedly more efficient at actually heating the room. An open wood fire draws a great deal of heated household air up the chimney; a well-specified gas log set puts far more of its output into the space it's in.

Gas can be very dangerous, so it's important to always have a gas line repair and leak detection company on hand — which is one reason having the same company install the set and maintain the supply is worth something.

Vented, Vent-Free and Choosing Correctly

Gas log sets come in two broad types and the difference matters. **Vented sets** burn with a tall, realistic yellow flame and exhaust through the existing chimney with the damper open. They look the most like a real fire and put less heat into the room, because much of it goes up the flue.

**Vent-free sets** burn much more cleanly and put nearly all their heat into the room, but they exhaust into the living space, which means they're subject to stricter regulation, room-size requirements, and oxygen-depletion sensors. They are not permitted everywhere and are not appropriate for every room.

Which is right depends on your fireplace, your chimney, the room and local code. We assess all four rather than selling whichever we happen to stock, and we handle the installation and any repair afterward.

Know the warning signs

When to Call for Gas Log Fireplaces

You've Stopped Using the Fireplace

A wood fireplace that's become too much hassle is the most common reason for a conversion — the room loses its focal point by default.

Logs Are Sooting or Sitting Wrong

Ceramic logs must sit in specific positions. Moved even slightly, they disturb the burn pattern and soot the glass and firebox.

Cracked or Deteriorating Ceramic Logs

Logs degrade with heat cycling. Broken pieces alter the flame path and should be replaced as a matched set, not individually.

The Set Is Decades Old

Older sets often lack modern safety features and burn far less efficiently than current equivalents.

The Heidler difference

Why Annapolis Trusts Heidler

Serving Annapolis Since 1947

Gas appliance work has been core to Heidler for three generations, not a seasonal add-on.

We Do the Gas Line Too

Installation frequently needs supply work. Because that's in-house, sizing and testing are handled by the same licensed team.

The Right Type, Not the Stocked One

Vented and vent-free suit genuinely different situations. We assess your fireplace and room rather than defaulting.

Logs Set Properly

Log placement determines flame pattern and sooting. It's the detail most often got wrong, and we take time over it.

Questions?

Gas Log Fireplaces FAQs

What's the difference between vented and vent-free gas logs?

Vented sets exhaust up the chimney with the damper open — they look most like a real fire but send much of their heat up the flue. Vent-free sets exhaust into the room, so they heat far more efficiently but face stricter code, room-size and safety-sensor requirements and aren't permitted everywhere.

Can I convert my wood-burning fireplace to gas logs?

In most cases, yes — it's one of our more common requests. It requires a gas supply run to the firebox and an assessment of the flue and firebox condition, both of which we handle.

Do gas logs actually heat a room?

Better than an open wood fire, which draws a lot of heated household air up the chimney. Vent-free sets heat considerably better than vented ones, though they carry the extra requirements described above.

Why do my logs make the glass black?

Almost always log placement. Ceramic logs are designed to sit in specific positions, and even a small shift disrupts the burn and causes sooting. It's usually corrected during a service visit rather than needing new parts.

Do gas log fireplaces need annual servicing?

Yes. Burners collect dust and debris, logs shift and degrade, and pilot assemblies need cleaning. An annual [maintenance](/gas-fireplace-maintenance) visit before the heating season prevents most mid-winter failures.
