This is the work that comes up when something is being added rather than repaired: an addition that needs its drainage tied into the existing system, a basement bathroom where none existed, a garage or basement floor drain, a detached structure that needs a drain run to it, or an exterior building drain that has failed and has to be replaced rather than cleared.
It's a different job from drain cleaning, which restores flow through a line that's already there, and from sewer excavation, which deals with the main lateral running to the public connection. This page is the branch work in between — the buried drain lines on your property that carry waste from a fixture to that lateral.
The thing that makes or breaks a buried drain is fall. Drainage is gravity-driven, so the line needs a consistent minimum slope set by code held across the entire run, and it has to be bedded and backfilled so that slope survives the ground settling over it. A line laid slightly flat, or one that develops a dip because it was backfilled carelessly, becomes a permanent belly that collects solids — and the only real fix is to dig it up and lay it again. What This Covers, and What It Doesn't
We handle sanitary drainage: the buried lines that carry waste from fixtures and structures into your building drain and out to the lateral, plus the floor drains and cleanouts that belong to that system. What we don't do is site drainage as a landscaping discipline — regrading a yard, French drains for surface water, or stormwater management design. Those are a different trade, and we'd rather tell you that up front than take the job and hand you an approximation. If your problem is water sitting in the yard rather than a drain line that isn't carrying, you want a grading and drainage contractor, and we'll say so.

Can I add a bathroom in my basement?
Often yes, but it depends on whether the existing building drain sits low enough for gravity to reach it from where you want the fixtures. Where it doesn't, an ejector pump system is the normal answer. We establish which situation you're in early, because it changes both the design and the budget significantly.
How much slope does a buried drain line need?
There's a minimum fall per foot set by code, and it varies with pipe size — larger lines need less slope than smaller ones. What matters more in practice is that the fall is consistent across the whole run and survives backfill. Too little and solids sit; badly bedded backfill creates a dip that does the same thing.
Do I need a permit for a new drain line?
Generally yes — new drainage is well past a like-for-like fixture swap, and buried work needs to be inspected before it's covered. We handle permitting and the inspection as part of the job, the same as we do on [remodeling work](/custom-remodeling).
Can you replace a drain line without digging the whole run?
Sometimes. If the failure is one section and the rest of the run holds proper fall, a targeted repair is reasonable. But if the line was laid flat originally, replacing one piece leaves the actual cause in the ground. The camera inspection tells us which of those you have before you spend anything.
Do you handle yard drainage and standing water?
No — surface water, regrading, and French drains are a landscaping and grading discipline rather than a plumbing one, and we'd rather point you to the right trade than approximate it. If water is coming up through a floor drain or a fixture, though, that's ours.
